As you may have noticed, the temperatures are soaring, and we want to give you a heads-up that your air conditioner might be working extra hard to maintain your desired indoor temperature. With such extreme heat, there can be a significant temperature difference between the outside temperature and your desired comfort level.
Do You Feel Cool Air Blowing From Registers?
Rest assured, if you still feel cool air blowing from your registers, your air conditioner is working and doing its best to keep you comfortable.
However, due to the challenging weather conditions, you might notice that your air conditioner is struggling to reach the exact temperature you set on your thermostat. We want to assure you that this is a normal response to the extreme heat and not an indication of any problem with your system.
The Design of Kansas City Residential HVAC Systems
Most HVAC systems in the Kansas City area are sized to maintain a 20 degree temperature difference between the outdoor and indoor temperatures. For example, if it is 90 degrees outside, most HVAC systems can maintain an indoor temperature of 70 degrees. (It will be running constantly!)
If the temperature is 100 degrees outside, you may not be able to cool your home much under 80 degrees during the hottest part of the day.
The #1 Thing You Can Do To Help Your AC Run Properly is Change Your Air Filter
To help your air conditioner cope with the hot weather and optimize its performance, we recommend checking your air filter.
A clean filter ensures proper airflow and prevents your system from working harder than necessary. If you haven’t done so recently, take a moment to inspect your filter and clean or replace it if needed. This simple step can go a long way in helping your air conditioner function at its best.

P.S. – I almost forgot to mention one more thing! If you typically let your home temperature rise a few degrees during the day when nobody is home, we recommend not doing that during the extreme heat. Allowing the indoor temperature to rise even a few degrees will make it very difficult to recover those degrees during the heat of the day (late afternoon) when you want it to cool down.
